Bryan was sent to Pentonville jail, pending psychiatric evaluation to determine whether he was fit to stand trial. There, he told a staff member that he wanted to kill one of the guards and “eat his nose.” On several occasions, prison officers had to use riot shields to remove him from his cell.

Transferred eventually to Broadmoor maximum-security hospital on April 15, 2004, Bryan was initially confined to his cell. But despite his violent history, he managed to manipulate the authorities into downgrading his security rating and moving him to a medium risk ward. It would have tragic consequences for another inmate.
